Workers in Wakatu Estate are convinced there will be a fatal accident at the corner of Main Rd Stoke and Elms St unless something is done to improve the safety of the high-risk intersection. A dramatic three-car collision during rush-hour last Thursday was the second crash last week and latest in a long line of accidents at the intersection. The crash occurred at around 4pm when a car pulled out of Elms St in the Wakatu Estate and was hit by a second car travelling south

along Main Rd Stoke - a third car was also involved ending up in the ditch next to the road. Incredibly three people, including two children, suffered only minor injuries in the accident but Ian Gabites who works at the Bridgestone Tyre Centre in Wakatu Estate believes it’s only a matter of time before someone is killed at the intersection. “It’s not too bad during the day but at rushhour it’s diabolical. I’ve seen three or four accidents there this year and there’s going to be more unless something happens. “The guy down at Morley Motorcycles got

Cheryl says the speed limit on Main Rd Stoke needs to be reduced from 80kmh to 50kmh to make the intersection safer. She says southbound vehicles often turn left

Every day’s a Pets at Work day for Brandy Next Friday is national Pets at Work Day, but for 10-year-old chocolate Labrador Brandy and her owner Eric Eden it will be business as usual when they roll up to work at ET Engineering in Richmond. Brandy has been going to work at ET Engineering on Beach Rd “nearly every day” since she was eight weeks old and Eric says she has become part of the furniture. “She likes the company so I started bring her to work when she was eight weeks old and never stopped. All our regular clients know her by name and she’s been painted on our Christmas window every year so she’s part of the business now.”

Although Brandy spends most of her day chilling out by the office, Eric and office lady Vanessa Frater say she always has some business to attend to. “I bring her a cracker every day and she won’t leave me alone until I give it to her,” Vanessa says. “She’s also got this old soccer ball and she’s always trying to get the guys to play with her. “She also comes to all the staff meetings and sidles up to the guys for a pat. She likes going on deliveries around town too.” Pets at Work Day is being promoted next Friday by Purina. Jennifer Chappell of Purina, says pets and the workplace are a good combination.

Cars stolen for joy rides new listings

A string of car thefts in the region may not be linked, say police. In the last week there have been several car thefts in Wakefield, Richmond and Stoke. That is on top of another three earlier in May, two of which were found burning at the Appleby River. Police say a high proportion of car thefts in Nelson are for joy riding, and while they’re still investigating many of the recent cases they couldn’t say if there was a pattern or not.

On Saturday night, a Subaru Legacy was stolen from Nayland Rd. It belonged to Amanda Christie’s husband, who is fisherman and currently at sea. “I emailed him and I got an email back full of swear words,” she says. Last Tuesday night, Brittany Jacobsen says her partner’s car was stolen from their Wakefield home, taken for a joy ride and found smashed up on Princes Dr. Brittany says she is shocked that their car was the one stolen. “When you come up our street there’s all these cars parked on

the side of the road and not one of them was targeted, and our place is on a back section and we have two German Shepherds so it wouldn’t have been the easiest to steal.” She says the car was locked. They first found out that the car was missing when Brittany’s partner received a call at six o’clock in the morning telling him the car was found in town. “My partner went to bed about 11.30pm and then my sister, who works night shift, got home about 3.30am, so I’m guessing it would have been between 12 and 3am.”

College student joins high IQ club Richmond mum Katie Prosser always knew her daughter Kelly was smarter than average and now it’s official, with Kelly joining international high IQ society Mensa. Kelly, 15, scored in the top one per cent of the Mensa IQ test when she was seven but did not join Mensa because Katie thought she was too young. But Katie submitted Kelly’s test results to Mensa this month after she read about the society in a story in the Waimea Weekly - there are only 400 Mensans in New Zealand and only five were known to be in Nelson before Kelly was admitted to the society last week. Kelly says she decided to join Mensa “because I wanted to challenge myself and push myself a bit further.” The year 12 Waimea College student has already pushed her academic boundaries, attending the George Parkyn National Centre for Gifted Education One Day School when she was a pupil at Mapua School. However, Katie says she didn’t need to see her daughter’s IQ test score of 156 to know she was super-smart.

“She started talking when she was five months old and by the time she was 12 months she was using big sentences,” Katie says. “I remember shopping in the supermarket and Kelly saw a person with achondroplasia (dwarfism) and said ‘look at the little man’. “I told her to keep quiet, but she kept saying it and everyone thought it was me because they didn’t think a one year-old could talk. It was really embarrassing.” These days, Katie says she has given up arguing with her because Kelly invariably wins. Although Katie jokes that her daughter should become a lawyer with her exceptional debating skills, Kelly says she hopes to study medicine when she leaves school. Mensa’s testing coordinator for Nelson and Mensa member, Judith Tuckwell, says she is delighted Kelly has been accepted into the society. She says Kelly will enjoy the company of other young members of the group “because they have a different outlook”. For more information see www.mensa.org.nz

Landfill agreement delayed: The launch of a single regional landfill arrangement between Nelson and Tasman has been delayed from its proposed 1 July start. The proposal was for the Nelson-owned York Valley facility to be used as a regional landfill until 2030 when it is expected to be full. The Eves Valley facility in Tasman would be redeveloped for a similar use beyond that time. “The stumbling block has been the lack of agreement on funding future capital costs for the redevelopment of the landfill at Eves Valley to receive Nelson waste. The father of 7 year-old cancer fighter Deanna Marsden says he’s overwhelmed at the community support for his family: “All I can say is thank you”. The family’s church, St Stephen’s, hosted a fundraiser last weekend which raised a whopping $12,000, and days later the Mike Pero Foundation donated $2000 to the family. Adam Marsden says the money is vital for his family. “We had to give up our jobs. I’m still employed, but I’ve probably worked one full week since January and my wife had to quit her full time job. “We don’t ask for donations or anything but people just step forward, and what do you say? You can say thank you but people don’t really want to hear thank you. It’s awesome.” Deanna was diagnosed with a cancerous bone in her leg in December last year. She was flown to Christchurch for two rounds of chemotherapy and surgery to remove part of her leg. Adam says, despite the

She had her cast off on Monday which was the first time she’d seen her leg since she had surgery. “We were a bit worried because she would be able to see completely what had been done, but it didn’t worry her one bit. She just started asking when she could start using her prosthetic leg and when she could start learning to walk again.” Adam says he and his partner DJ Lambert do alternating weeks in Christchurch and back with their other three

children in Nelson. They did get some financial support from Work and Income, but Adam says that dried up about three weeks ago. They’ve been living off the proceeds of a Givealittle page that was set up by a family friend. Kirsty Tough organised the event at St Stephens Church and says she was “amazed” at the success of it. “We’re so thrilled. The community was amazing. Garin band a runner up at Rockquest

With only six days to pull together a new song, Garin College band Final Class now have the chance to enter the SmokefreeRockquest national finals in Auckland after placing second in the regional finals. The four-piece band is made up of Garin College students Abbey Hahn (lead vocals), Tom Schultz (synthesiser), Elizabeth Mitchell (keyboard and synthesiser) and Michael Whittaker (drums). Weavers get to work for charity When Suzanne Bateup closed her Nelson Weavers Gallery she was left with an abundance of wool and woven fabric. She donated many of the items to charities including the Christchurch earthquake, however she was left with wool warps that she had wound and hand-dyed that could only be used specifically for weaving. She contacted old friend Lesley Nicholls, a weaver based in Wellington, to see if she knew of anyone who would like to weave them up for charity. In her 70s, Lesley decided to take on the project herself. Over the past two years, she has hand-woven over 100 coloured blankets and 50 pink scarves, and sent them back to Suzanne to wash, finish off and get ready to sell for charity. Suzanne called upon the women of the Richmond Creative Fibre Group to help finish the items off by knotting fringes, ironing, trimming and labelling. Around 28 women from the group met at Birch Hall at the A&P Showgrounds last week armed with irons, combs, scissors and their

hands, ready to assist. “Ladies have come from all over Nelson to help do this. Even though there are weavers, knitters and spinners, there is a lot of teamwork in our group," says Karyn Batt, president of the Richmond Creative Fibre Group. Lesley and Suzanne decided to sell the blankets and pink scarves, and donate the funds from the sale of the blankets to both the Child Cancer Foundation and Nelson’s Fireshire Foundation. The sale of the pink scarves will go towards the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. “This is a community project. These women have been very good in helping out, it is just part of our creative community life,” says Suzanne. An exhibition of woven garments will be displayed at The Refinery from June 19 to 26, with an opening on Friday, June 19, to thank all those who have given their time to the project. The hand-woven blankets and scarves will be sold during the time of the exhibition to raise funds for the three chosen charities.

Habitat for Humanity to open home store

Andrew Board Habitat for Humanity is set to open a secondhand homewares store in Tahunanui within the next few months. All they need is stuff to sell. Habitat for Humanity affiliates throughout the world run similar “ReStores”. Nelson chairman Rob Silcock says it will help secure the financial future of the organisation, while also providing Nelsonians with cheap, quality, second-hand goods. “The cost of running an affiliate like Nelson has become quite huge because of compliance costs, auditing costs, and health and safety regulations,” says Rob. “So this is to help with those costs and to ensure that donations to us from local people go directly to building homes, not on compliance fees.” The store is due to open in the old Save Mart building on Quarantine Rd in early July. Volunteers are currently working on the building to get it ready for the opening and the board is advertising for a store manager. Committee member Brian Egerton says the big push now is to encourage locals to donate goods to the store. “If people donate us a good quality piece of furniture, that’s like a $100 donation to Habitat for Humanity. We’re hoping people think of us when they have old items they’d like to get rid of.” Items they’d like donated include household furniture, outdoor furniture, tools, building supplies, appliances, old kitchens and bathrooms as well. “Anything else that you’d use around your house is also welcome,” says Brian. “As long as its saleable.”

I live in the Waimea Village and have to say that the 240lt bins are a ridiculous idea. I have no where to keep it, unless it’s in the front garden, as I have no access from the back of my property to the front for pick up. Motorcycle club helps with church rebuild

A Nelson-based women’s choir is looking for new members so that it can keep “having fun” entertaining the community with their singing. The Te Manawa World Music Choir was formed in March 2007 and has subsequently performed at concerts throughout the Nelson region “three or four times a year”. But now the acapella choir is losing some of its regular members and it needs some new recruits to keep singing. “Mosaic was the first Nelson women’s acapella choir but it had such a long waiting list, we decided to form our own choir,” choir member Vicki Spiers says. “We have grown from that to have about 15 to 20 singers but we are losing seven overseas in the next few months so we need more singers.”

Vicki says the choir rehearses at the Reformed Church of Nelson at 15 Burrough Place in Enner Glynn every Thursday at 7.15pm. They perform at events and venues around Nelson and are fortunate to have a “most fantastic conductor” in Paxe Archer and a wonderful group of singers. “We regularly perform at the Lantern Festival and have sung at Matariki at the Victory Community Centre and for the residents at Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village. We love it - singing is good for the soul and we enjoy the friendships we have developed.” Vicki says they sing songs from many different cultures, in two, three and four part harmony. A project to restore the 100 year old Tadmor Church got a welcome boost, receiving a $6500 donation from the Nelson Motorcycle Club this month after the club held a race in the district. The Tadmor community raised $35,000 to purchase the church and adjacent cemetery last year, to stop it being sold to a private buyer. Now the community is raising funds to restore the ageing building, so the motorcycle club decided to help out by donating the proceeds from its Tadmor Charity Ride held on April 12. “We have held the event for the last three years and donated the proceeds to the Tadmor Church Society,” club committee member Peter Wilks says. “We had 275 riders and they went across Brent Hodgkinson and his brother Warwick’s properties and also the Anglesey prop-

The Book Fair opens its doors at 10am on Saturday and organisers say there are thousands of books up for grabs. Councillor Pete Rainey says, whether readers have a passion for hunting and fishing or knitting, New Zealand classics or science fiction, there is something for everyone at this year’s Book Fair. “A dedicated team of volunteers has

Ten years on, the league has had more than 200 players with learning disabilities participate and new competitions have been created in football, cricket and multi-sport. The success of the leagues, and her drive and dedication towards it, has seen Heather nominated in the community spirit section of the Pride of New Zealand Awards. She says the success of the Fulton Hogan league has been teamwork, on and off the court. “There’s a big team of volunteers that run the league and keep it operating. There are more than 40 people who make it work.” Heather started the league after coaching players with disabilities who could only practice. “They would practice and love it, but then, nothing. There were no games for them. Then, we had three big squads together and I decided ‘enough’, it’s time to start something up.”

She then went to the Nelson Basketball Association and had two requirements, the players be registered to the association and the league was to be played at the stadium where all the other basketballers played. “They had to be included and feel like they were playing in a proper league, not stuck out in some gym that nobody went to.” Ten years on the league is still the only one of its kind in the country and Heather has helped start junior programmes in football and cricket for children

with learning disabilities. She says the ultimate goal is to make sure the leagues are sustainable and the Inclusion Sports Trust has been set up to ensure that. All of Heather’s hours are voluntary and she can’t say exactly how many she does a week, other than “a lot”. She says she does it for love. “I’m really passionate about it and what these kids get out of it. So yeah, I do it because I love it.’ Nominations for the Pride of NZ Awards are now open. HOPE RANGE AERIAL POSSUM CONTROL OPERATION Vector Free Marlborough Ltd wishes to advise the public of its intention to aerially apply the toxin Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) for the purpose of controlling possums in the Hope Range area. The operation is being undertaken on behalf of OSPRI which runs the TBfree programme to protect local farms from tuberculosis infection.

Control Area: The Hope Range treatment area spans over 13,634 hectares of the Kahurangi National Park, near the Murchison District, on the eastern and western faces of the Hope Range. The southern boundary is Mount Murchison and the northern boundary is the head of the Hope River catchment. Public access to the treatment area is either via Owen Valley East Road, or along State Highway 6 through to the Tadmor Saddle. A detailed map of the treatment area may be viewed by appointment at the office of Vector Free Marlborough Ltd (see contact below), the Tasman office of TBfree, McPherson Street, Richmond or the local Department of Conservation office in St Arnaud between 9:00am and 4:00pm weekdays.

Thank you Brightwater Thanks to all of Brightwater for turning out for the 100th Anniversary service of ANZAC Day at the Memorial gates in Lord Rutherford Road. You are the best. This was the mightiest turnout we have ever seen for a local ANZAC service. A 100 year anniversary will never happen again, so once again thank you all for taking part. The Brightwater Community Association wants to also thank Rev Martin Harrison for organising the service, Peter Carmody for the music and organising the sound, Deputy Mayor Tim King for his inspiring address, Brightwater School for their display in the hall and the memorial gates, and Wanderers Sports Club for the catering of the morning tea held afterwards, the Brightwater Scouts group, the RSA , the NZ Army, and all those who worked silently behind the scenes to make it all run smoothly. Thanks also for your feedback and expressions of appreciation. At our next monthly meeting, which will be on Monday 8 June, we will be welcoming the Mayor of Tasman, Richard Kempthorne, and the Council Chief Executive, Lindsay Mc Kenzie . This will be a great opportunity for all residents of Brightwater to find out what our council is going to do in our district. The meeting starts at 7.30pm at the staffroom at Brightwater School. sis or tragedy as communities did when our country was gripped by war. So it was at the Brightwater ANZAC service – a very special day for our community to join together. I must applaud all of the people who organised the event and thank them for making the day such a memorable one. The planning and participation of the community individuals and groups was superb. To have the veterans, veteran’s families, the RSA, services personnel, the Brightwater Community Anglican Church, the Brightwater Community Association, Wanderers Sports Club, Volunteer Fire Brigade, Scouts, Brightwater School, Police and many individuals all represented and co-operating really made the day a huge success. There was a very big crowd and all age groups were well represented. I must especially note the fine speaking by Rev. Martin Harrison and by Tim King. They had both obviously done a lot of research and gave very personal and moving speeches that gave context to the sacrifice of our young men (and one woman) and the impact that that had on our community. The hall was decked out in period decorations and the morning tea was delicious and plentiful. It was good to see the hall full to the brim! The school had a lot of projects relating to ANZAC day with a very high standard of artwork and writing material. A great thanks to everyone who made this community event possible. have had our team management, coaches, players and supporters attend services, followed by a breakfast at the Clubrooms. The community has become more involved as time has gone on and this was very apparent this past Anzac Day with a large crowd in attendance. In the words of Rua Sargent “Days when a community comes together are among the most special that we experience, and we are blessed that we can come together in remembrance – not in acute crisis or tragedy as our communities did when our Country was gripped by War.” The 100 year event was a very special occasion. The community groups that were involved helped to make it a memorable event. Special thanks to the Wanderers volunteers for food preparation and decorating of the Brightwater Hall, and the community volunteers who helped with the clean-up. Also to the Brightwater School kids who provided some special class projects on Anzac Day for display in the hall. School holiday coaching clinic A coaching programme was held for children in the community in the April School Holidays. Our Rugby Development Officer, together with senior rugby players, ran a very successful clinic for children aged 5 to 14 with 50 plus children involved, developing new

Trout fishing at the Waimea River Park fishing ponds On Saturday 16 May Brightwater Scouts met at the Waimea River Park Fishing Ponds developed by Fish and Game. They were given an explanation about the fishing gear and how we could hopefully catch a trout, and then they were lead by guides to ponds where they could see plenty of fish and the excitement began to rise. Worms were placed on hooks and soon everyone was fishing. The first fish landed was taken on the fly rod which made it extra special. Then another scout hooked a fish only to lose it after a few seconds. Undeterred, he carried on casting and before long had another fish on. After some careful playing the fish was netted and landed. It was dispatched by the scout who then proudly announced this was the first fish he had ever caught. The day continued with all the scouts catching a fish, some tak-

ing almost two hours but with a very patient guide helping by their side. The last two scouts left were overheard talking with the conservation going like this: Scout #1 “I am meant to be going to a friend’s sleepover tonight. Not sure what time it starts so we may as well stay till it gets dark.” Scout #2 “We will stay fishing till well after dark, that’s the best time to fish.” The Brightwater Scouts would like to thank the Sports Fishing for Youth Charity Trust and The Fish and Game volunteers for all their help in making a very special afternoon, and to Crimpy for his fish anatomy and gutting class for all 15 fish.

There’s plenty to smile about at Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers,, with both of their senior rugby teams towards the top of the table heading into club day this Saturday. The Car Company division one side looks strong in second spot and having booked a place in the final and the division two side is only one point off the top of the table spot with games still in hand. All teams from the club will play at home on club day, starting with the kids kicking off at Lord Rutherford Park from 9.30am to 1pm, before the intermediate one side plays the curtain raiser at the Brightwater Domain at 12noon. From there, the division two side will play Huia at 1.15pm

Wanderers are into their fourth year back in the division one competition and despite experiencing some major injuries, they are doing well at the moment and Frazer says, anything can happen, come finals time, if you are in the top four. Division two coach Todd Bavin says the team is

They will be playing Huia on club day and says it will be a tough challenge as they are their bogie team but it is always good to play in front of a home crowd and he is encouraging people to come along to the game and cheer on the team as the boys really appreciate the support. “We are a tight knit group and tracking nicely, performance wise we had a slow start but it has all started to click now and you don’t win the competition in the first round, you win it in July,” says Todd. The JAB section is another integral part of the club and this year there is a strong contingent with around 240 children playing in the competition. JAB chairman, Ian Biggs, says the kids look forward to club day as there are lots of fun activities

and games throughout the day and it is a chance for them to interact with the senior players. “Club day brings the whole community together, the senior players come down to the junior games and referee the matches and help out during the day and then the juniors go and watch the seniors play their games, “ says Ian. Club day will be followed by a hangi meal and music. The meal is $5 per head, and all club members are welcome to attend. There will be sausage sizzles, bouncy castle, lots of activities and raffles during the day and rugby balls, kindly sponsored by Taylors Contracting, will be given out to all Wanderers children at Lord Rutherford Park. Members from the rugby league, netball and cricket sections of the club are also encouraged to come along to enjoy a great day out.

Locals aim for Junior Black Sox Six young Nelson softballers are facing an exciting three months, playing international tournaments on three continents with the ultimate goal of gaining selection for the Junior Black Sox team for next year’s World Series in the US. Mardi will complete the final event on their international calendar when he joins the Junior Black Sox in Prague for the European Super-Cup in August. The Nelson players were selected for the national squads following a series of impressive performances by Waimea College, Nelson and Upper South Island teams at tournaments around the country. Waimea College was third in the division one national secondary schools champs in Wellington in March, Nelson Under-17 won the South Island Mainland Shield in Christchurch in December, while the Upper South Island Under-17 team was fifth at nationals in Hastings in January. Josh Grant says they are all looking forward to their international programme, although he concedes it has been challenging preparing for a summer sport in winter. “It’s hard when you are playing winter sports and training for softball as well,” Josh says. “But we have all been lucky to have really good people like (former Black Sox star) Marty Grant and (former Junior Black Sox coach) Dennis Dolejs, who are committed to training us.” All the players except Louis have also been named in the 36-player Junior Black Sox training squad for next year’s World Series in Michigan. “That’s the ultimate goal,” Riley says. “We’re all aiming to get in that final squad and, if we do, to win the World Series.”

Waimea College netballers off to perfect start to season Carol Cook

Waimea College 10A have the perfect record and sit at the top with 12 points after defeating Nelson Senior B 34-25, while Rival Blue Diamonds convincing 43-26 win over Jacks Navy gives them second place on nine points. Nelson College for Girls 10A’s 26–23 win over Suburban Blue see them on eight points, along with Nelson Senior B. Suburban Blue on six, Nayland College A’s 31–25 win over Jacks Navy sees the two on four points, while Jacks Silver trail on one point. Nelson Senior B opened their account when they scored on their centre pass, however Waimea proved from the onset they were not on court to play “friendlies” when they converted turnover ball and scored off their own to rack up five unanswered goals. Waimea’s centre Jess Kelly was not afraid to let fly with the bomb into tall shooter, Sheree Peters, who offered a great option under the post converting nine from ten. With such a dominant effort on attack it was no surprise to see

ter was tied at 7-all. While there was turnover ball to be had by both teams in the third period, only Waimea capitalised which, in turn provided them with a 9–4 advantage. Nelson’s Eilish played consistently, however she lacked the opportunity in the circle. Bria Scott was reliable and available at wing attack while her move to centre increased the defensive pressure through court. Waimea coach Miranda Hart is blessed in having such a versatile, talented roster and, at half time, she was able to have Harriet Ogilvie exchange her WD bib for the GA one. Harriet had been into everything on defence, quick to the loose ball and was a competent ball carrier however, she was a revelation in her shooting role. She found her rhythm early and impressed with her long range shots, converting six from six. Waimea’s attack had to change their mindset after Sheree was replaced by Bailee and were forced to refrain from the long fed and look to deliver from the circle edge. Bailee too, became more productive as she worked the circle with her new partner. While Waimea dominated the third quarter 9-4, Nelson left their best until last when they outscored Waimea 9-7 on the back of some great defensive work by goal defence Rose Eggers who pulled in two well-timed intercepts

CYCLING: Waimea College cyclist Britney Kerr continued her good late season form winning the individual time trial at the Tasman secondary schools road cycling champs held in Nelson last week. Waimea’s Shaane Fulton was third. Britney followed her time trial win with a second in the road race. Waimea’s Hayden Squance finished second in the under-20 boys time trial while Daniel Reid and Bailey Ford were second and third respectively in the under-17 boys time trial and road race. Emma Charles was second in the under-15 girls road race. Waimea Intermediate’s Sarah Sturm and Sophie Kersten were second and third in the year seven-eight girls road race and time trial. MOUNTAINBIKING: The second round of the Nelson Mountainbike Club’s Mini MTB race series will be held at the Top of the South Speedway on Lansdowne Rd this Sunday. Registration from 9.30am with racing from 10am for riders aged five to seven, eight to 10 and 11 to 12. The event will be followed by the second round of the Cyclocross Nelson Tasman series. Registration from 11.30am with the first race starting at 12pm.

Karters prepare for top racing weekend Simon Bloomberg Nelson's top karters are getting revved up for the biggest weekend of the year, with the 30th edition of the Central New Zealand Sunbelt Sprint Championships at the Classic Hits Kart Raceway in Redwood Valley near Richmond this Saturday, with day two in Blenheim on Sunday. Karters will compete in eight heats and a final, only dropping their worst race result, at the two-day meeting that has attracted drivers from around the country. A big contingent of Nelson karters has entered the champs, including Junior Rotax driver Jarod Fisher of Nelson and Cadet Rok Class karter Josh Bradley of Brightwater. Jarod won the Junior Restricted Sunbelt title last year and has continued that form into the Junior Rotax class this year, winning the Jason Richards GP on his home track last month.

However, Jarod says he is still finding his way in the new class and will have to be on top of his game to be competitive in what will be a strong field. "It's a full-sized kart, compared to the three-quarter-sized one I had last year, and I've gone up from 100cc to 125cc, so it's been a steep learning curve. "But it will be an advantage racing on my home track on the first day. It's a technical track which suits me, although it's going to be a good field so it's going to be hard to win."

South Island champ Ayden Polaschek from Christchurch is the favourite to win the class. Josh also featured at last year's Sunbelt champs, finishing second. He will be hoping to go one better this year. The Rotax Heavy class also has a strong field of 17 drivers, including Nelson's Kevin Barker who finished second just behind Tiffany Chittenden last year. Nelson's Matt Butchart lines up in the KZ2 class. Racing will be held from 10am to about 4.30pm this Saturday.

The Richmond Bowling Club signed-off a successful season when it collected four Champion of Champion titles at the Bowls Nelson prizegiving at Saxton Pavilion earlier this month. Richmond dominated the singles finals with Jean McKenzie winning the junior women’s title and Helen White taking out the women’s final. Jean also combined with Lyn McCausland to win the junior pairs while the fourth title went to the club’s veteran pair of Colin Delaney and Rex Lankshear. It was the first time in over a decade that Richmond has won both the women’s singles titles although Helen she very nearly blew it in her rain-delayed final against Motueka’s Moana Cross. “We played four ends of the final and I was down 4-0 when it got rained-off. It got to 12-0 down when we started playing the rest of the final two weeks later so it wasn’t looking good. But I just forgot about the score and started concentrating on my bowls and came back into it. Waimea to warm up Crusaders crowd Simon Bloomberg Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys will be stepping on to a bigger stage when they play Central in the curtain raiser to the Super Rugby game between the Crusaders and Hurricanes at Trafalgar Park this Friday. And that will give the Tasman Trophy showdown between the top club teams from Nelson Bays and Marlborough an extra edge. “It will be a big occasion and we’re looking forward to it,” Waimea Old Boys assistant coach Mark Milne says. “It will be

something different and a new challenge - it’s great that Central have given up their home game and come over for this.” Although Waimea and Taylors Contracting Wanderers have already booked a place in next week’s Tasman Trophy final, Mark says Friday’s game will be their biggest challenge this season. Waimea is presently on 44 points after nine wins, while Wanderers are on 37 with Central on 32. “It will be our toughest game,” Mark says. “Central have well-drilled forwards, a good goal kicker and are well structured. “We’ve had the bye which was a good break

but we are still missing a couple of players through injury. It’ll be interesting to see if we can continue our momentum after the bye - we’ll see if we are refreshed or rusty.” The game kicks off at Trafalgar Park at 4.45pm with the Super Rugby game between the Crusaders and Hurricanes timedto start at 7.35pm. Waimea Old Boys senior B beat Takaka 45-19 in their Car Company Division Two match last Saturday to remain unbeaten in the second round of the competition and hold their place at the top of the competition. Bs coach Wayne Bateman says Takaka are

a pretty good side so we was happy with the win. “Our ball-runners did well and found some metres around our pods.” This Saturday Waimea will travel to Golden Bay to play unbeaten Collingwood. “It will be the biggest game of the season for us, it will give us a real test and show us where we are,” says Wayne. “They have a big forward pack, good first five so we’ll need to be patient and hang onto the ball. Our defence will be important. We have a deep bench and we’ll need all 22, but that’s the good thing the guys on the bench are as good if not better than the starters.”

The Waimea Old Boys senior women’s team heads to Blenheim this Saturday when it will play Riwaka and Moutere in the third round of Car Company Women’s Tens club rugby competition. Waimea lost to Motueka High School before beating Marist in last week’s games at Neale Park although coach Steve Curtis says the Motueka game was a close encounter that “could have gone either way”. “It was 17-all with a minute to play and they got around the outside of us and scored,” Steve says. “Motueka are a new team in the competition and they are young and fit and fast and they managed to outpace us out wide quite a bit.” Steve says the game against Marist was “more physical” with the two forward packs having a good battle for supremacy. Waimea led throughout with first five-eighth Jess Drummond scoring three tries and Ashleigh Inch “running good lines and supporting well at second five-eighth”. New player Jarrah Solly also made a good debut. Jarrah is one of four players from Collingwood who travel to Nelson to play for the team. Waimea plays Riwaka at 1.15pm and Moutere at 2pm at Awarua Park this Saturday.

Speed Limit Bylaw Review

Richmond & Districts Information Centre

Tasman District Council is reviewing its Speed Limit Bylaw. The first stage of this review is to invite you to have your say about speed limits on local roads in Tasman District. Is there an issue with the speed on the road where you live? Are there other roads that you consider should have the speed limit reviewed? The rule is used to balance the interests of mobility and safety by ensuring the speed limit on a particular road is safe. The speed limit must also be appropriate and credible for the level of roadside development and the category of road for which it is set. Speed limits must also be nationally consistent. The current speed limit bylaw and associated maps indicating speed limits on all roads within the District can be found on the Council website www.tasman.govt.nz

Volunteers are required to work three hour shifts on a weekly or fortnightly basis at the Information Centre in Gladstone Road, Richmond. Initially successful applicants would be required to work with more experienced volunteers before being asked to work on their own. Although applicants should preferably have a good knowledge of the local community, this is not necessary, as the Centre has a large database. You should be well presented and enjoy meeting and conversing with visitors from all over New Zealand and the world. The Centre is well appointed with good facilities. Rates Rebate Deadline The rates rebate deadline for 2014-2015 rating year is quickly approaching. Applications MUST be in before 30 June 2015 to be accepted. The Rates Rebate Scheme operates under the Rates Rebate Act 1973. The purpose of the Scheme is to provide a subsidy to low income home owners on the cost of their rates. The maximum rebated for this rating year is $605. Forms are held in each of the Council’s offices. These have a Rates Rebate Income Eligibility Table on the front. The property you are applying for must be your principal place of residence. You cannot claim a rates rebate for the rates payable on a property that is used principally for business, farming, commercial or industrial purposes, or a home that is not your usual place of residence.
